Say yes to the DERN DRESS!

So apparently today they are having a say yes to the dress marathon on TLC. And I find myself watching shows like this because as a sewer and costume designer I enjoy watching all the different dresses. But even as someone who knows how much goes into sewing, how much fabrics cost I can not believe what some brides will pay for a gown. There was one bride who paid 20, 000 dollars for a custom made designer gown. And than when she came in she decided she didn’t like it. Than she got another dress by the same designer that was 27,000 dollars. Came back and decided she wanted the lace taken off the skirt. Which IMO and in her dad opinion too ruined the gown. I mean really?! Oh and mind you she didn’t like the first one because she wanted lots of heavy beading and the top to be see through. This is impossible. With the heavy beading the see through material would have fallen away from her body.

So than we go from the amazingly shockingly priced bride to the bride whose mother hated everything she put on. Just hated it. I mean wasn’t just like “I don’t like it” she was Brutal. And there was one gown with a Victorian lace overlay (BEAUTIFUL) that the bride just LOVED she was near in tears when she came out in it. And her mother was cruel to it. But the bride ended up picking that dress anyone. And mom ended up dealing with it. I just don’t think she was the kind of mom who was going to be happy with anything her daughter picked. Because her daughter had very different taste. She had taste kind of like me. Out there.

So I am enjoying this show but the way some people act just startles me. It makes me go seriously? Why? It is also making me remember that in two years I will be renewing my vows with my husband out at the MN Renaissance festival. Which is where I wanted to get married but they were booked the year I wanted to get married. So we decided for 5 years we would renew out there. Nice huh? But now I am left with the thought of what I should do for my renewal gown. I want to be comfortable, and yet I want to be a Queen for the day. Not that I didn’t look fantastic on my original wedding day (I think I did) but I really want to be a Queen. So I am thinking full renaissance regalia, with Purples and creams. Because well I don’t get to wear purple out there much unless I am being sneaky. (Which I am known to do). So who knows what I will do its two years away, but I am thinking about it now for obvious reasons. Gowns take a while to make. Especially major gowns. It is time to start sketching.

I hope by then I have a batrillion dollars and can make it out to do photos as a gift to you guys ^_^
